Mission Statement

We, the planning committee for Celebrating Asian American Women, recognize that women are gendered and racialized organically though a process of societal formation. Thus to understand their role and place in society we are required to formulate a historical, transnational, and contemporary analysis that acknowledges the multiplicity of the ways in which women experience, endure, combat and complicate racism and sexism. Compounding the struggle of Asian American women is the resounding silence blanketing the existence of APA Women’s experiences and struggles. The aggregation of APA experience and the “model minority myth” effectively suppress and oppress APA women by denying the space for critical discussion and engagement with the ways in which Asian American women are limited by systems of patriarchy and racism.

Celebrating Asian American Women was conceived as a space where praxis and theory, community members and students, can meet and converse. This event will attempt to deconstruct the oppression of Asian American Women, from a multi-disciplinary approach that will include: community dialogues, educational speakers, the politicization of the personal, art as a form of resistance and self-expression, and mobilization for action. Critical to this event is the centralization of the experiences of the attendees---we believe that empowerment is not something bestowed upon women through arbitrary “authority” but is rather a process of self-education and self-recognition of the multiple ways in which Asian American women speak, dance, create, and exist.

There is an immense need for Asian Pacific American women to move beyond the boundaries and constraints of societal formations. Hopefully, by creating educational and engaging space for our audience members, the women of our community will leave with enfranchisement and a greater intimation with agency. Ultimately we want to transcend the conversations of one night and become a part of the epistemologies that dictate society. We want to create a space for our ideas to soar, to transform our world long after this solitary evening.
